When your mind keeps racing ahead
If your thoughts loop on what could go wrong and your body stays alert long after the moment has passed, you may be living with anxiety. You are not overreacting. Your system is trying to protect you.
Signs you may be anxious
- Racing thoughts that imagine worst-case scenarios
- Tense shoulders, clenched jaw, restless legs
- Trouble falling asleep or waking with a knot in your stomach
- Replaying conversations or checking things repeatedly
- Avoiding situations because of how they might feel
Why this happens
Anxiety is your nervous system running an over-sensitive alarm. It often develops after periods of stress, uncertainty, or unresolved difficulty. It is treatable and very common. Gentle, consistent practices help your body learn that it is safe to settle.
Gentle steps to try this week
- 1Practise box breathing: 4 in, 4 hold, 4 out, 4 hold, for two minutes.
- 2Name five things you can see, four you can hear, three you can touch.
- 3Limit news and social media in the first and last hour of the day.
- 4Move your body gently, a short walk or stretch helps discharge alert energy.
- 5Write the worry down in full, then ask: is this a problem to solve now or a feeling to soothe?
