Stress Type Guide

When 'good enough' never quite feels good enough

If you hold yourself to a very high standard, over-prepare to feel safe, and struggle to rest until everything is done, perfectionism may be fuelling your stress. The standard is not the problem. The cost it asks of you is.

Signs you may be high-pressure perfectionist

    • An inner voice that says 'it still isn't good enough'
    • Difficulty starting because of fear of getting it wrong
    • Over-preparing, over-checking, over-rehearsing
    • Clenched jaw, holding things in, struggling to delegate
    • Rest feels uncomfortable until everything is finished, which is never

    Why this happens

Perfectionism often develops as a protective strategy: if you can be flawless, you can avoid criticism, rejection, or shame. It is common in high-achieving women and people who learned early that performance equalled love or safety. It can soften with practice and self-compassion.

Gentle steps to try this week

    1. 1Set a 'good enough' threshold for one task today and stop when you reach it.
    2. 2Write the kindest thing you would say to a friend in your situation, then say it to yourself.
    3. 3Build a small daily ritual with no goal attached, a walk, tea, music.
    4. 4Notice the inner critic and name it. 'There you are again.' Then choose your next move.
    5. 5Practise finishing things at 80 percent on purpose, just to feel that the world keeps turning.
