When you're going through the motions but not really there
If life feels muted, your emotions are flat, and you feel oddly distant from yourself or the people around you, you may be experiencing disconnection. This is often the mind's protective response to too much. It can soften with care.
Signs you may be disconnected
- A flat, muted feeling, neither very low nor very happy
- Feeling far from your body, as if watching life from outside
- Reduced interest in things that used to bring joy
- Difficulty crying, laughing, or feeling moved
- Going through the day on autopilot
Why this happens
Disconnection often develops after prolonged stress, grief, or experiences that were too much to feel at the time. The mind quiets the volume to protect you. It is not a flaw. With gentle, consistent reconnection, feeling can return.
Gentle steps to try this week
- 1Spend five minutes each morning checking in with your body. What does it actually feel?
- 2Do one small thing that used to bring you joy, even if the feeling does not return yet.
- 3Use texture, temperature and movement, a warm drink, cold water on hands, a short walk.
- 4Write three small things you noticed today, even if neutral.
- 5Reach out to one person, a short message counts.
